June is PTSD Awareness Month
It’s June and the start of summer. It’s also PTSD Awareness month and nearly 8 million people in the U.S. are suffering from PTSD (post traumatic stress disorder). But what about those with spinal cord injury?
Many of the events that lead to spinal cord injury are also major events that can lead to PTSD. In fact, recent studies estimate seven to 44 percent of individuals with spinal cord injury suffer from PTSD. No matter how the SCI occurred and even for those non-traumatic injuries, there is a high likelihood you will suffer from some form of PTSD.
So how do you know if you're suffering from PTSD following an injury? According to the American Psychiatric Association, there are three categories of symptoms:
Persistently re-living the event that caused your injury
Persistent avoidance of stimuli associated with the event
Persistent symptoms of general increased arousal and stress
